The New River Valley Amateur Radio Club often participates with the Mountains of Misery bicycle ride by providing communications. The course for the bike ride takes participants through mountainous terrain where cell phone communication is unreliable or non-existent. Participation of our club members enhances safety and coordination for the bicycle ride, and doubles as a training exercise for new and seasoned ham radio operators.
